Over half Australian households paid over $1,800 on monthly mortgage repayment

In 2021, over half (52.5%) of Australian households with a mortgage paid over $1,800 a month in mortgage repayments, up from 49.4% in 2016. Less than one-fifth of households paid less than $1,000 in both 2016 and 2021, with the proportion decreasing from 18.8% in 2016 to 16.6% in 2021. Compared to 2016, an additional 55,380 Australian households made a monthly mortgage repayment of $5,000 or more in 2021.
