Tourism Insights from the quarter ending June 2022

International nights

  • Jun 2022 quarter data shows a rapid recovery.
  • 75.5% of Jun 2019 (same season before Covid).
  • 62.8% of March 2020 (when borders shut).
  • Visiting friend and relatives - the largest category of international nights by purpose, count about 50% of total international nights, follow by Education, Holiday and Employment.

Interstate nights

  • 42,751. Highest since Covid (March 2020).
  • 2.4% higher than June 2019 (same season before Covid), recovered quickly.

Tourism Insights from the year ending June 2022

Travel Purpose

  • Over half Australia’s visitors travelled to visit friends and relatives.
  • Visiting friends and relatives accounted for 55%. In the year ending June 2019, this figure was 30%.
  • Holiday travel accounted for 17%, followed by business travel at 11%. Travel for employment was 6%.

Recovery

  • International nights spent in Australia up to 80.7 million, 30% of pre-Covid levels. 7.6 times more than last financial year (2020-2021).

However, widespread lockdowns from July 2021 onwards are included in the year ending June 2022. Travel restrictions from that time had a great impact on interstate movement.

  • Domestic Interstate visitor nights up 12% from previous financial year, 65% of pre-Covid levels.
  • Domestic Intrastate visitor nights down 8% from previous financial year.
