International nights
- Jun 2022 quarter data shows a rapid recovery.
- 75.5% of Jun 2019 (same season before Covid).
- 62.8% of March 2020 (when borders shut).
- Visiting friend and relatives - the largest category of international nights by purpose, count about 50% of total international nights, follow by Education, Holiday and Employment.
Interstate nights
- 42,751. Highest since Covid (March 2020).
- 2.4% higher than June 2019 (same season before Covid), recovered quickly.
Tourism Insights from the year ending June 2022
Travel Purpose
- Over half Australia’s visitors travelled to visit friends and relatives.
- Visiting friends and relatives accounted for 55%. In the year ending June 2019, this figure was 30%.
- Holiday travel accounted for 17%, followed by business travel at 11%. Travel for employment was 6%.
Recovery
- International nights spent in Australia up to 80.7 million, 30% of pre-Covid levels. 7.6 times more than last financial year (2020-2021).
However, widespread lockdowns from July 2021 onwards are included in the year ending June 2022. Travel restrictions from that time had a great impact on interstate movement.
- Domestic Interstate visitor nights up 12% from previous financial year, 65% of pre-Covid levels.
- Domestic Intrastate visitor nights down 8% from previous financial year.
