Who we are

The Yarriambiack Shire stretches from the Wimmera River just north of the Grampians in the south, to the centre of the Mallee in the north covering 7,326 square kilometres. The Yarriambiack Creek is the main natural feature traversing the Shire. The area is also linked by road and rail systems that run in a north-south direction. The region's tourist attractions include a range of emerging and further developing products such as the Silo Art Trail, recreational lakes & weirs, and heritage & landscapes trails.

Yarriambiack Shire’s economy remains dominated by dryland agriculture, particularly wheat, barley, lambs and wool, legumes, oilseeds and alternative livestock. Agriculture is the largest industry, employing 28% of the Shire’s workers, followed by health care and social assistance, retail, and transport.

Since 2017, the Yarriambiack Shire has producted 11% of Victoria's gross farm value of wheat, 16% of barley, 19% of chickpeas, 45% of lentils and 11% of other pulses.

The relatively new prominence of tourism follows the success of the Yarriambiack’s Silo Art Trail (Australia’s largest outdoor gallery) which has helped to make the whole Wimmera Mallee region a genuine destination. It has taken the industry in Yarriambiack from fringe to mainstream. Visits to Yarriambiack have changed from a possible stopover en route (to the Murray, Melbourne or Adelaide) to a genuine destination.

The region’s tourist attractions include a range of emerging and further developing products such as the Silo Art Trail; recreational lakes & weirs; and history, heritage and landscapes trails.

The next challenges are to build on the Shire’s attractions, link the region’s experiences, expand the target markets, and substantially increase the economic yield within the Shire.
